Carla’s story

‘I came to regard my flashbacks and intrusive memories like “unfinished business” that my brain was trying to get me to understand. What was most helpful to me was to repeat to myself over and over, “This is a memory – it’s not happening now!” I tried to ground myself in the present and pay more attention to sights and sounds around me that helped me focus on the here and now. I also deliberately reduced my exposure to potential “triggers” by not going to movies or watching TV programmes that I anticipated would have distressing scenes, even if they were only remotely related to the trauma I had gone through (such as watching violent situations with people being helpless). I kept my surroundings as calm as possible and watched very few news reports for quite a long time.’
